Alzheimer's Victim: Tack Shaw
We have the heartwarming story of a loving wife who is going "the extra mile" for her husband, a husband, who has been diagnosed with alzheimers.
Tack and Bunny Shaw are, in Bunny's words, living one day at a time. About four years ago, while on a cruise, Bunny noticed Tack could never seem to figure out where he was going. A doctor's appointment then changed their lives. Tack was told he had alzheimers. For bunny it meant she would be on duty 24-7, looking after Tack, but that also meant finding the time to take care of herself. Watching a loved one and the progression of this disease is difficult. But bunny has met this challenge head on. She's had the strength to turn this negative, into a positive.
One thing which has definitely helped in this situation is Tack's personality. While some people would deny they have alzheimers, Tack's immediate acceptance, and strong faith in his family, has allowed every day to be a positive day, a time to enjoy what life has to offer, and be with his wife and family. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile.

Mornings are hectic here as the boys get ready for school. They must take enzyme tablets to help them digest their food, they're given masks to help with congestion in their lungs, and then they get their pats. For the Grady's, it's been a life changing nine years. the odds were one in four one child would have cystic fibrosis. they have two. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile.

We're back in Douro Township with the Grady family. Young Kenny and Nick Grady were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis about nine years ago. For the family it's a staggering challenge, but the boys are doing well - largely because of the loving care they're receiving from their parents.
Kenny and Nick are, on the outside, just like any other boys their age, but these brothers are facing the challenge of cystic fibrosis - together. These days children with cystic fibrosis are living longer. In the "60's it was a different story, children barely made it past the age of four. They usually died of malnutrition or complications from chest infections or pneumonia. Kenny and Nick however, are now enjoying good health, but their parents are well aware of the situation, and keep a close watch. For the family, it's a difficult time, to say the least, but what about the boys themselves. Despite having to be cautious with their health, and work every day to keep the cystic fibrosis in check, they're obviously very close. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile.

He has been retired for 25 years. Mike's an easy going guy who helps people get through any roadblocks they're having on a computer. Then you have the library's shut-in service, something many people in our community rely on. Sherry is a staff member who, some time ago, noticed that some people who used to come to the library couldn't make it anymore. She decided she could do something about it by taking the library to them. The reaction she gets from the shut ins makes it all worthwhile.
If you look around the library, you'll find still more volunteers are busy going about their jobs, such as the group called The Friends of the Library. Poor living conditions in Haiti have prompted a group in Lindsay to take action. They have come together, to gather donations, sew, knit, crochet, and do whatever they can to give mothers and new borns in Haiti a better quality of life. And they're also being very inventive.
This group of women is on a mission, a mission that gives them the satisfaction of knowing they're doing all they can to help. They learned of the need in Haiti from an elderly couple, two pastors, in Dunville, Bev and Tina Leslie. Tto answer this call, this group, in true assembly line fashion, is hard at work, making the essential supplies that will fill a layette. The layettes are sent to Haiti so that when a baby is born the child can be dressed, then handed to the mother, otherwise, the baby may have nothing to wear. The women are recycling flannel, and also take plastic bags and recycle them into bed matts, so Haitian children don't have to lie on the ground. These layettes are packed into forty foot containers for shipment to Haiti, along with other essentials like medical supplies. The cost is substantial, but community support is making it all possible. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile.

Shari Seymour #1
We take you to Gore's Landing, where a person's strong affinity for animals - cats, dogs, horses - has shaped her life, for their benefit, and for the benefit of their owners.
It's a serene, quiet, and very peaceful life in Gore's Landing. Shari Seymour's familiar call brings out her trusting animal friends. Even having a stranger with a television camera didn't stop most of them from showing up. Shari's in tune with their needs, something most people know very little about. Some time ago she helped a person care for about forty wild cats who would soon be losing their home, an old barn, to new development. For those fortunate few, this art studio became their home - a place where they feel safe and secure. But this story goes on. Shari has spent years in Canada and the United States, performing massage techniques on horses and dogs. She has co-authored a book on dog massage, and being involved in programs that have extended worldwide. This, plus what she has done locally, has brought many people to her door for help. Shari Seymour #2
We head to Gore's Landing where Shari Seymour's strong affinity for animals continues to shape her life. She is going the extra mile, in a unique way, for those who are not able to help themselves. Shari Seymour has transformed one room of her home to benefit older animals living with painful medical problems. Some may have been injured, others, may have arthritis or similar joint problems. Shari got the swimming idea from her own dog, Montana, who was showing signs of being in pain. From there, Shari did her homework on hydro therapy, and found it's not something new. It's very big in the United Kingdom, Western Canada, and parts of the U.S.. By being in the water, the animal's weight is supported, which takes the pressure off injured joints.
Shari has long been an advocate for animal welfare. She has been using massage therapy and stretching techniques on animals for years, and has also been teaching these techniques to pet owners. Word has been getting around about shari's pool and her healing techniques, and people like joan stickle are seeking her out. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile.

Peterborough's Ken Sharp is becoming known throughout Canada, and the world, for surviving on dialysis for 32 years. In Part 2, we look behind the scenes at the strong support Ken was able to rely on - from his parents.
Employees of Fresenius Medical Care Canada in Richmond Hill were in awe of Peterborough's Ken Sharp when he received his award. The company's equipment has been keeping Ken alive for those 32 years. The idea to honour Ken came from the company's C.E.O., Ken Lipps, who soon learned where much of Ken's inner strength came from, because the executives and employees know how difficult it is to be on dialysis several times a week for that long a period of time.

We meet an individual who has earned the admiration and respect of his friends and neighbours, a man who is always available to lend a helping hand.
It's a familiar sight on his Peterborough street, Buck Bertrand using his snowblower. The difference is, he's often not in his own driveway, but in someone else's. Buck's wife, Vereana, kids him about all the work he does, with admiration in her eyes. She knows he loves what he's doing. As for Buck, he's a quiet man who doesn't like to talk about himself. You see, throughout the years Buck has taken the time to help his neighbours do whatever needed to be done. no job was too small. John Blake has the details in this segment of The Extra Mile.

Anna Young
On the outskirts of Warkworth, Anna Young is living her dream. She is going the extra mile to care for german shepherd dogs - who, without her, would likely be euthanized.
At the home of Toronto German Shepherd Dog Rescue, Anna Young offers misunderstood, rejected, or no longer wanted german shepherds a home. She says it gives them a chance to heal and become happy again. Anna says that through inappropriate care or no care at all, many of these dogs have become emotionally scarred, and now, just require time.
